Resume Overview

Welcome to my Portfolio and Resume site. Additional entries, photographs, and videos will be added, so if set design is your thing, keep checking back for updates.

I have been a freelance Production/Set Designer for television since 1997. My clients include the following major broadcasters:

CTV, TSN, The Discovery Channel, MuchMusic, Comedy Network, W Network, Global, CBC, YTV, Citytv, and OLN.

Over the years I've made it a point to design a diverse range of shows that include:

The Gemini Awards (the Canadian Academy Awards), CTV News, Sue Johansen's Talk Sex shows (Oxygen & W Networks), NHL on TSN (Broadcast Set Design Award winning), Cream of Comedy, Discovery's Daily Planet, eTalk (entertainment news), and MuchMusic celebrity events.

I've also designed sets for a variety of commercials (Corona, Toyota, Neutragena...) and industry events (WIFT Awards, International Autoshow)

Design Awards/Nominations:
  • 2003 Silver International Broadcast Design Award for Production Design of "NHL on TSN"
  • 1999 Gemini Nomination - Production Design for "Comedy Now" on CTV & Comedy Network. I was the Art Director, Production Designer: Andrew Murray

Selected projects from 2009 to 2006:

Daily Planet (2007) - The Discovery Channel Director: John Morrison, Executive Producer: Ann Marie Varner

This was my second complete redesign for Daily Planet. The first set was very warm, earthy, Home & Garden -like. This second (current) set was designed for the show's new direction with high-tech metal, screens, and bright color. The show uses a lot of cameras and movement and the set accommodates almost a full 360 degree environment. (Note: Full video of the making of the set -Daily Planet episode- available)

CTV Winnipeg News (2006) - CTV Creative Director: Jon Arklay, Executive Producer: Allan Morris

Included the interior design for new building construction that would also be used as background for the set. The News show is shot with their working newsroom as the main background with views out a window of the building and into a control room for a secondary backgrounds. I was able to work with the building's Interior Designer to frame specific shots and change architectural elements and color to maximize the depth in these shots.

CTV UpFront (2006/2007/2008) - CTV
Creative Director: Jon Arklay

A yearly in-house production for CTV's advertising clients, it is typically held in a theatre in Toronto. I've designed their Upfront for various large prestigious theatres: The Princess of Wales Theatre, The Elgin Theatre, and finally at the new Four Season's Opera House (for the past 2 years). The installation time is typically very tight i.e. the night before the event (after an existing theatre show that day). Most set pieces are built off-site before-hand and then installed, hung, wired, lit, and rehearsed-on within a 24 hour time period.
